Corruption at Bridge Authority Leads To Financial Irregularities

In another example of corruption and incompetence, so inherent in the Bahamian political system, auditors have announced they are unable to reconcile the figures for bridge toll income and payroll and related party expenses with those recorded by the Authority’s own internal systems.

A copy of the Bridge Authority’s 2001 financial accounts, only signed off by its directors on June 11, 2004, some three years late, revealed that BDO Mann Judd, the auditors, said that no other accounting methods were available to them to determine whether the $4.339 million in bridge toll income and related expenses recorded for 2001 were accurate.

Once again, hundreds of thousands, maybe millions, of dollars have gone missing due to the corruption that has infected successive Bahamian governments.
