Frances Could Devastate Islands of the Bahamas

Hurricane Frances will possibly be compared to the devastating 1929 storm which wreaked havoc in Nassau, weather experts said yesterday.

If the storm maintains its wind speeds, structural damage looks certain, with sustained winds of 100-110 mph and gusts of 140mph, said Michael McAuliffe of Accuweather in Pennsylvania.

Even more alarming is that Frances could dump between four and eight inches of rain on the Bahamas over a 12-18 hour time span. This would mean extensive flooding in low-lying areas.

Mr. McAuliffe told The Tribune last night, “We think it is going to continue on a west, north-west track. You will start feeling the effect of the storm sometime Thursday evening and it will last until afternoon of Friday.

“Winds will be strongest on the northern and eastern sides of the storm.

“This is likely to be ranked with the most dangerous major storms and we feel Nassau could be in its path.”
