Jeanne Nearing Hurricane Strength, Aiming at Bahamas

Tropical Storm Jeanne is taking aim at the Bahamas as it gains strength.

This morning, Jeanne is centered about 70 miles southeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico. There’s a hurricane warning posted for the U.S. Virgins and Puerto Rico. Movement is to the west-northwest at about eight miles an hour. Top sustained winds are near 70 miles an hour, with strengthening expected.

But forecasters say interaction with some land and some shear might inhibit strengthening for the next couple of days.

Florida and other East Coast states are worried about Jeanne’s eventual track. For now, the center of the official forecast cone shows a track over Puerto Rico and into the Bahamas over the next several days.

For now, NONE of the forecast models shows a track into Florida. But steering is going to depend on what happens with Hurricane Ivan and a ridge over the western Atlantic.

Jeanne centered at latitude 17.6 north, longitude 65.4 west.
