Jeanne Still On Course To Sweep Bahamas Islands

The Bahamas is facing the “unprecedented threat” of a second hurricane sweeping through the chain of islands in the same year.

Tropical Storm Jeanne – expected to become a hurricane tomorrow – is bearing down on the Bahamas and is predicted to strike the country this weekend.

Just two weeks ago Hurricane Frances tore through the islands killing two people, destroying houses and schools and wreaking havoc through communties while casuing millions of dollars worth of damage.

The latest threat may force emergency workers to suspend relief efforts to Grand Bahama and other Family islands, it was disclosed yesterday.

Jeanne is moving along a northwest path at seven miles per hour and is 339 miles from Inagua and 693 miles from New Providence.

A hurricane warning remains in effect for the south-eastern Bahamas islands, including Acklins, Crooked Island, Inagua, Mayaguana and Ragged Island.

A hurricane watch remains in effect for the central Bahamas, including Cat Island, Exuma, Long Island, Rum Cay and San Salvador.

With Jeanne being a very wet hurricane, forecasters are predicting flooding in some areas.
