Dominican Republic Tropical Storm Jeanne (jeen) is heading into open seas after battering the Dominican Republic and creating dangerous storm surges in the Bahamas.
A meteorologist with the National Hurricane Center says the erratic storm is now expected to turn south over the Atlantic — sparing storm-battered Florida and the southeastern U-S.
Jeanne is blamed for at least nine deaths — including seven in the Dominican Republic, where the storm drove thousands of residents from their homes Friday.
Earlier, the storm dumped up to two feet of rain in parts of Puerto Rico.
