Auto Theft: Big Business In Nassau

Police officials are concerned with the unusually large number of vehicles stolen last weekend by thieves taking advantage of neglect or carelessness on the part of vehicle owners.

Last weekend, 14 vehicles were stolen from various areas of New Providence, but an even greater concern to police officers was that in most cases the thieves were “practically invited.”

Car thieves usually roam the streets on the lookout for an easy target, such as cars parked near nightclubs and in shopping areas. The most common way a thief accesses a vehicle is through unlocked windows or doors and when the keys are left in the ignition.

The Bahamas police, for reasons unknown, refuse to disclose the number of stolen vehicles for this year but more than 600 were stolen last year indicating a faction of organised crime that is rarely discussed in the Bahamas.
