With allegations that millions of dollars are missing from accounts within departments at Her Majesty’s Prison, social advocate and lawyer Paul Moss told The Tribune yesterday that he and others dedicated to prison reform, are concerned that funds, which could be used to improve prison conditions, are disappearing.
Persons are concerned that two accounts at the prison, specifically those of the commissary as well as the accounts of inmates who go on work release programmes, are showing “irregularities”.
Mark Wilson, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security, would not confirm that there was millions of dollars missing from prison accounts, but said that some time ago the department of the Auditor General, after completing an audit, suggested that the Ministry conduct an investigation on all of the prison accounts, particularly one of them.
Mr. Moss said that he has received information that the missing prison funds exceed some $2 million.
Last year Mr. Wilson admitted that there is a “corrupt underworld network” operating at Her Majesty’s Fox Hill Prison that the ministry is determined to stamp out.
