Cost of a Bahamas Vacation Goes Up

American Airlines announced today that effective immediately it is increasing surcharges on all its international fares to help offset the continuing high cost of jet fuel. This move follows increases in international surcharges announced recently by several major international carriers.

“While we are mindful of keeping fares as low as possible for consumers, we simply must try to offset the substantial increase in fuel costs we continue to experience,” said Scott Nason, American’s Vice President-Revenue Management. “Crude oil prices have now risen above $50 a barrel, up dramatically from a year ago. We estimate that the full year impact of the rise in fuel prices will cost $1.2 billion in added expense compared to last year.”

The surcharge amounts for the Caribbean and The Bahamas is $15.00 each way. Ouch!
