Inquest to Open on Toddler Killed in Bahamas Speedboat Incident

An inquest is being held today into the death of a toddler killed after a speedboat ploughed onto a beach in the Bahamas.

Paul and Andrea Gallagher watched in horror as their two-year-old son Paul was struck by the boatᄡs propellor as he lay dozing on a sun lounger.

The couple, from Orpington in Kent, who have another son named Andrew and a daughter called Heather, are expected to give evidence during the inquest.

The family had been on the holiday of a lifetime when the accident happened two years ago.

Paul had been sleeping on Cabbage Beach by the Atlantis resort when a boat crashed through crowds of holidaymakers, its propellor striking him on the head, his parents say.

The infant, who had been the first millennium baby to be born in the London Borough of Bromley, died a few days later in hospital.

An investigation was carried out by Bahamian authorities although the family claim they were モlet downメ by what they saw as a lack of action.

They are hoping the inquest into their sonᄡs death will shed more light on how he died and possibly lead to a fresh investigation, this time by British police.

The Gallaghers said in a statement: モOur family will never recover from the events that happened on that day.

モWe still do not fully understand the truth surrounding the death of our little boy and who is accountable for it. We hope the British inquest will go some way to helping us find out more.メ

The inquest at Bromley Magistrates Court is being held by coroner Dr Roy Palmer and is expected to last up to two days. ᅠ
