Bahamas ‘Will Have To Adjust’ To OPBAT Cuts

Government officials are bracing for the possibility that some functions of Operation Bahamas Turks and Caicos will have to be scaled back if the United States decides to cut funding for the organisation.

Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of National Security, Mark Wilson told The Tribune yesterday that while a lack of funding to this important tool in the fight against drugs in the Bahamas will be a major set back, law enforcement officials will have to adjust.

“OPBAT is the main mechanism we use against drug trafficking. While a large percentage of drug interdictions is done by the Bahamas acting alone, we receive tremendous support from OPBAT,” said Mr. Wilson.

The Bahamas has derived many benefits from OPBAT, a fact which has many persons in law enforcement concerned by America’s decision to cut funding.
