Bahamas Prays For Pope

The Archdiocese of Nassau joined in prayer with millions of Catholics around the world as Pope John Paul II neared death in the papal apartments in the Vatican, Rome.

Following two days of worsening medical problems, the 84-year-old Pontiff was spending his final hours on earth last night. His life started to ebb after his kidneys failed from complications of a urinary tract infection.

About 70,000 people stood vigil in St Peter’s Square outside the papal apartments way past midnight and into Saturday morning, Rome time. They knew there was no hope, but many said they wanted to be near to “give him comfort” in his last hours.
