Police were on Tuesday on the lookout for the driver of a dark-coloured rented vehicle after an early morning hit and run accident left a man dead, authorities said.
He became the country’s 53rd traffic fatality for 2005.
Police Inspector Walter Evans said the incident happened shortly after 12am when a dark male wearing dark coloured clothing was struck by the vehicle while walking on the southern side of Coconut Grove Avenue in the area of Twin Brothers.
Mr. Evans said the vehicle was traveling west at the time. He said following the accident, medical professionals pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
The man, whose identity was not released, is believed to be in his late 30s.
Following the accident Mr. Evans gave some advice.
“We are advising those individuals who have to travel in dark areas during the night to wear light coloured clothing,” he said.
Anyone with information about who the driver of the vehicle may be is asked to call the nearest police station or 919.

Editor’s Note: One of the reasons for the dramatic increase in hit-and-run accidents, in The Bahamas, is because irresponsible insurance companies fail to deal with hit-and-run drivers by cancelling their policies. Also, the police officers in charge are related to some of the hit-and-run drivers.
