Police Slow To Prosecute Assault On Catholic Priest

Almost two weeks have passed since Roman Catholic priest Father Alain Laverne was brutally attacked in Pindale, Eight Mile Rock, but Grand Bahama police say that they have made no further progress in the case.

Police confirm that investigations are still going on; however, they say no further comments on the matter will be available until they have some other developments in that investigation to report.

According to reports, the incident is said to have stemmed from a minor car crash, but an onlooker got involved and began swearing at the priest after discovering that he was of Haitian ethnicity.

Reports furthered that sometime Friday evening, December 2, 2005, Father Laverne was headed home after his service in West End, and along the way ラ somewhere in Pinedale, Eight Mile Rock ラ he got into a minor accident.

Reportedly, a lady was reversing onto the main road when the reverend was passing and when he tried to swerve out of the way the two cars collided.

Reports further stated that a few men in the area, who witnessed the accident, approached the scene and began carrying on in a disorderly manner. Father Laverne then instructed the men to back off because it didn’t concern them.

One of the men then referred to him as a “f-ing Haitian” and later hit the priest with a large rock.

The Bahamas government also failed to prosecute the racist black Bahamian who attacked the white founder of Bahamas B2B with a cutlass, while shouting racial slurs.

That makes at least two high-profile cases where Bahamians involved in racial hate crimes have gone unpunished.

Meanwhile, Bahamas police are rushing ahead to prosecute the white Bahamian who insulted and threatened a black Bahamian doctor by calling him the infamous “N” word and waving a shotgun in the air.
