The first traffic fatality for the year was recorded on Grand Bahama over the weekend when a car driven by a man believed to be in his 60s plunged overboard into a canal, police reported yesterday.
The accident occurred around 3:10 a.m. Sunday near the intersection of Coral Road and Bahama Reef Boulevard.
Police said that a female resident was driving her car north along Coral Road when she was “side swiped” by a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.
The driver told officers that as her car came to a stop she noticed that the vehicle that had hit her had disappeared and she also heard a very loud noise.
When police arrived on the scene, officers noticed a trail of tire marks leading to a fence that had been knocked down and ending at the edge of nearby canal.
A police diver discovered a dark green and grey 1994 Toyota Windom resting on its roof at the bottom of the canal.
A black male, neatly dressed and believed to be in his 60s, was found in the car.
The body was transported to the morgue at the Rand Memorial Hospital.
Investigations continue.

Grand Bahama police were yesterday trying to determine how a black travel bag containing 30.5 pounds of cocaine with a street value of around $400,000 ended up onboard an American Airlines flight bound for Miami.
Freeport airport police reported that around 8:10 a.m. on New Year’s Eve, US Customs officers, assisted by a K-9 Unit officer, were conducting a routine pre-departure check of baggage when they noticed the black bag that had been tagged for the flight.
When officers opened the bag they discovered that it contained 13 kilos or 30.5 pounds of cocaine taped in plastic packages.
Grand Bahama Drug Enforcement Unit officers who are now trying to determine how the bag got aboard the aircraft confiscated the unclaimed bag.
The drugs were transported to New Providence aboard an OPBAT helicopter for further investigations.
