Hit-And-Run Puts Two Teenagers In Hospital

Officer in charge of crime briefing Inspector Walter Evans said around 12 a.m. Monday an 18-year-old man was the first victim of the crazed driver when he was walking in the Davis Street, Oakes Field area. He said a white car carrying four occupants pulled up on him and knocked him down. The man wasn’t critically injured, Insp. Evans said. The driver and his three assailants fled the scene, only to return.

“The vehicle then drove off and returned a short time later with only the driver,” he said. “The driver had an exchange of words with the guy and the others assembled then he returned to his vehicle and hit three females who were also walking in the area.”

An eight-year-old girl was also injured and all four victims were taken to hospital.

Insp. Evans said the hunt is on for the driver of that car.

A fire blazed outside a mall Sunday night.

Just outside Cost Right, a dumpster at The Town Centre Mall was the scene of a blazing inferno. Insp. Evans said sometime that night the dumpster caught fire, but had no major effect on the mall nor on one of its most popular stores as many by passers thought.

“Cost Right was not on fire,” Evans said. “The building received minor fire burns, so the fire didn’t really affect anything and it had no major damage to the mall.”

He said because of the Fire Services Department’s prompt response the fire was quickly brought under control. He added that while its cause is being investigated, it could have been sparked by a number of things.

“Sometimes people walk by and throw cigarette butts in the open or some people could have lighted it intentionally,” he said. “But we can’t say at this stage.”
