Shootout on Nassau’s Cable Beach

Inspector Walter Evans also said police launched an island-wide manhunt for the second suspect.

Official reports indicate that shortly after 7 o’clock Saturday night two masked gunmen entered the Cable Beach City Market food store and robbed that establishment of an undetermined amount of cash.

The culprits reportedly escaped in a white Nissan Sentra, however, officers on patrol in the area were alerted to the robbery, observed the vehicle travelling along Skyline Drive, and chased the getaway vehicle, Inspector Evans said.

As the Sentra approached Oak Hill Road, which is located just off Skyline Drive, the occupants reportedly exited the vehicle and fired several gunshots at the officers.

“There was a series of gunfire aimed at the police,” said Mr. Evans.

“The police returned fire and one of the two occupants was struck to the left upper back area.”

Police reported that the suspect succumbed to the gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The other occupant, Mr. Evans said, was able to escape into the surrounding area on foot.

The deceased was described as being of medium build and a dark complexion. He was believed to be in his early thirties, and was dressed in a black tam, a navy blue coverall, and dark-coloured tennis shoes, Mr. Evans said.

Police reportedly impounded the vehicle.

Investigations into the robbery and shooting, and the search for the other occupant of the Sentra continued on Sunday.
