Police Officer is a Suspect In Arson

Illegally hiding the name of the suspect, Police Press Liaison Officer Inspector Walter Evans confirmed only that the matter had involved a police officer.

He explained that on Thursday after 10 p.m. the police received information of a structural fire at Bellot Road off McKinney Drive. As a result three fire trucks were dispatched where they met fire coming from a single storey six-room concrete home.

The fire was controlled and extinguished, however the building and its contents were extensively damaged. Insp. Evans attributed the cause of fire to be as a result of arson.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing. In other cases being investigated by police, Insp. Evans said, officers from the Drug Enforcement Unit were on patrol in the Kemp Road area around 1 p.m. Thursday. During the patrol, he said, officers discovered a plastic bag which contained 58 live rounds of ammunition for a nine millimetre handgun. No arrests were made in connection with this discovery. “However we are certain that if these bullets were to get on to the streets they could have been used for some serious criminal acts and possibly some people may have been hurt as a result,” he said.

Insp. Evans also gave an update on the status of the investigation into the death of Kevin Rolle, 28. He was the country’s 8th homicide for the year.

On February 5, Rolle was at Lightbourne Avenue and Wilson Street when residents heard gunshots and shortly thereafter a male was seen running in the street. He fell to the ground, where he subsequently succumbed to a gunshot wound to the neck. Rolle was dressed in a red tam, a navy blue pullover sweater, grey warm up trousers and tennis shoes.

“We are following some positive leads in connection with this and we should be able to wrap this case up pretty soon,” he revealed. In relation to the activities of operation ‘Quiet Storm’, Insp. Evans said three illegal immigrants were arrested and handed over to immigration officials at the Carmichael Road Detention Centre.
