Toddler Perishes In Fire

Police reports indicate that the fire, which started shortly after 7 o’clock, burnt the three room wooden house to the ground where one-year-old Shaqeel Jean Pierre resided.

The structure was located in a shanty community just off Faith Avenue north, police Inspector Walter Evans said.

Police reported that another child who was in the house at the time of the fire was able to escape without injury.

Disclosing that the huse was not connected to the city electricity supply, Inspector Evans said fire officials believe the fire might have been started by a kerosene lamp.

The fatality was the first fire-related death for 2006.

In crime news recorded in the capital over the weekend, police reported that they were on the lookout for the two men who were responsible for shooting an employee of a food store during a robbery Saturday night.

The incident occurred after 9 o’clock when the gunmen held up the Price Is Right food store on Carmichael Road, police said.

The culprits reportedly robbed the establishment of an undetermined amount of money. Before leaving the store, one of the men fired a shotgun at the employee.

The employee reportedly sustained gunshot wounds to both legs and was taken to hospital where he was listed in serious condition.
