Well Known Educator Launches BHS Raffle

Accompanied by BHS education officer Inspector Percy Grant, Mrs Strachan launched the raffle outside the Scotiabank on Bay Street in Nassau.

“We are delighted that such a well known and highly respected lady as Mrs Strachan has given up time to support us today: It was fascinating seeing successive generations of her past students coming over to greet their much loved teacher” said BHS executive director Kevin Degenhard.

The Humane Society said that Mrs Strachan was chosen because the education of young people will be a prominent theme of the organisation’s activities over the next year.

Mr Degenhard explained that the BHS continues to work closely with a number of government departments on a range of animal related issues, but is now also investing a great deal of time and effort in providing animal care education resource packs to every school in the Bahamas.

The Lyford Cay Foundation awarded the BHS $7500 toward this goal and the society said the initiative is now well under way.

Applauded

The move is applauded by the Humane Society International (HSI) in Washington DC, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) in New York, the Pegasus Foundation in New Hampshire and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) in the UK.

“We want every child to grow up learning humane qualities through a considerate understanding of an animal’s needs.” said Mr Degenhard, “and we are grateful to the Department of Education officers who are supporting us, and to the Lyford Cay Foundation for funding most of the printing and publication costs.

“Without their help we would not have got this off the ground. By supporting our raffle this February, people will really be contributing to animal welfare in the future in these islands” he said.

Mr Degenhard said interested can keep in touch with developments by checking out the BHS website, bahamashumanesociety.com.

The first prize in the raffle is a 2006 KIA Optima V6, the second prize is a 2006 KIA Picanto, the third prize is two round-trip Virgin Atlantic flights to London.

The fourth prize is a $1000 Super Value gift certificate, the fifth prize is a $500 Cole’s of Nassau gift certificate and the sixth prize is a $100 Gourmet Market gift certificate.
