Another man is expected to soon face drug related charges in court after being arrested following the discovery of more than 1,000 pounds of suspected marijuana, the third drug bust in the past four days and the largest so far this year, according to police.
Police said they made the discovery around 7:45am Monday.
According to Inspector Walter Evans, police officers, acting on a tip, traveled to bushes just off the shoreline near Roses, Long Island.
Police said they discovered 1,300 pounds of suspected marijuana packed in crocus sacks.
The drugs reportedly have an estimated street value of over a $1 million. One person was arrested in connection with the find, police said. He and the drugs were reportedly flown to the capital.
Police said the search was on for others, who police feel may have been involved.
“We do not believe that just one person would have been involved in such a substantial drug find,” Mr. Evans said.
“We believe that other persons were a part of this and all efforts are being made at this point to find out who those persons are and their whereabouts.”
This latest drug bust came two days after two other Bahamian males were arrested following a similar find in Arthur’s Town, Cat Island.
In that incident officers reportedly uprooted 1,790 marijuana plants ranging in height from five inches to 12 inches.
Last Friday, three men were arrested after police netted a van filled with suspected marijuana worth an estimated $1.3 million.
The drugs were discovered in the Marshall Road area. The men have since appeared in court to answer those charges.
They all pleaded not guilty and were remanded to Her Majesty’s prison until their bail hearing on April 3.
Police officials have repeatedly assured that the Royal Bahamas Police Force will continue the fight against illegal narcotics.
