Newly appointed Minister of Housing Neville Wisdom said government officials will soon launch a “national inventory” to search for building space in New Providence. He added that as land in New Providence is limited, his ministry intends to use all avenues to try and access to as much land as possible.
“I intend to move efficiently and effectively in this challenge that I have,” Minister Wisdom said. “I’ve have asked for a national inventory to be engaged and I hope that in the not too distant future, we will be able to announce the availability of some land, how we intend to access it and how we intend to move the building of homes ahead.”
Earlier this year Minister of Immigration and former housing minister Shane Gibson revealed that the ministry had run out of crown land and were “pursuing other avenues with government entities, in a bid to acquire additional land areas.”
Since being transferred to the housing portfolio last month, Minister Wisdom said it is now his duty to find ways for the government to access this extra land to build homes for Bahamians. He added that a new National Housing Strategy will be implemented to spearhead the project.
“This way we will know the national requirements and how we will address those requirements, not for the next year or two, but for many years to come,” he said.
