In order to meet increased customer demand, IndiGO Networks, the Bahamas’ only private, licensed telecommunications operator, has recently undertaken an earlier-than-planned upgrade to its wireless network infrastructure in the Cable Beach area of New Providence, the company reported.
IndiGO is licensed by the Public Utilities Commission to offer voice telephony services in New Providence, Grand Bahama and Abaco and has already launched prepaid consumer services (IndiGO’s Long Distance Phone Cards) and post-paid business telephone services to the markets in both New Providence and Grand Bahama.
“We are delighted that adoption of IndiGO’s business voice services has been so well accepted that we had to increase the network capacity to our Cable Beach wireless station”, said Paul Hutton-Ashkenny, IndiGO’s President.
“Demand for services has thus far exceeded our estimates, but the scaleable design of the network means that expanding the capacity of the system to meet any growth is not a difficult process. We decided to increase this system’s capacity long before there was any likelihood of congestion on the network. Customer services were not affected during the upgrade.”
The company claims to have become the voice telephony provider of choice in New Providence and Grand Bahama just 18 months after its initial launch of services.
As the first legal competition to BTC, the mission of the company is to offer unrivalled customer service and network reliability, and to do so at the most cost-effective rates available in the market.
“That message has resonated with customers in New Providence and Grand Bahama,” the company said in a statement.
IndiGO, while also licensed to offer services in Abaco, is reportedly waiting for BTC to provide interconnection with its Abaco network in order to launch services to that island.
Once available in Abaco, customers on IndiGO’s network will be able to obtain telephone numbers on its unique 699 exchange, complimenting the 677 exchange in New Providence and 688 exchange in Grand Bahama that have already seen widespread adoption, the company said.
IndiGO expects to launch full residential service to consumers beginning in the summer of 2006.
IndiGO Networks is the registered business name of Systems Resource Group Limited (SRG), a Bahamian company with a 16 year history in offering technology and telecommunications solutions to businesses and residential consumers.
Under the liberalisation policy of the Government of The Bahamas to deregulate the telecommunications’ sector, SRG was granted the first and currently only license to allow international and domestic voice competition with the Bahamas Telecommunications Company. SRG’s license extends to New Providence, Grand Bahama and Abaco.
