An open letter to the Bahamas Prime Minister and all Cabinet Members.
I have been traveling to the Bahamas for well over three decades, was here for its independence, have always loved the islands and its people and admired the democratic government that was secured since the inception.
I was thus shocked and deeply saddened when I listened to a recent speech by the honorable Keod Smith, Ambassador to the Environment. I never expected a blatant abuse of authority in a nation that unlike many of its neighbors has the utmost respect for the rights of the individual.
Whilst Mr. Smith is entitled to defend himself against allegations made in a recent magazine article, it is most inappropriate to use a forum such as the House of Assembly to air a dispute where he is involved as a practicing attorney, and then to compound his reprehensible behavior by launching into a diatribe against two prominent individuals, Mr. Bronstein and Mr. Lindroth, who live and work in the Bahamas and who have always promoted the best interest of this country.
Mr. Smith further defies the rules of acceptable behavior when, using the most inflammatory language, accuses both individuals of being rapists, pirates and Nazis.
Such personal attacks are more odious since Mr. Smith must know that Mr. Bronstein is Jewish.
Mr. Smith also gratuitously attacks the Charlotteville development, with which my company is involved. We worked closely with the Bahamas Government and legal profession to create the Charlotteville Development, and I am surprised that Mr. Smith would not get his facts straight, before speaking negatively of this fine development. The project represents a significant investment in the Bahamian economy, and was designed for the benefit of Bahamian residents.
With no malice in this communication I do hope that Mr. Smith was simply carried away in his own defense and that his behavior as an important member of your government does not reflect a new government policy of intimidation against those who come to invest and bring value to these beautiful Islands.
Sincerely,
Carlos Ulloa
