A wife claims police have repeatedly failed to respond to her complaints of physical abuse against her husband because he is an officer in the force.
She has accused him of imprisoning her and their children in their home for two whole days – and inflicting a cut on her forehead, which required 27 stitches.
The woman, who wished to remain anonymous, said she has filed five or six complaints about the physical abuse she has endured. These were recorded at various police stations and the police complaints unit.
"I have not had anyone call me back, or as much as ask to hear my side of the story," she said.
The woman said her husband beat her in front of the children and, on one occasion, took the phone out of the house and locked her and the children inside for two days.
She said they weren't, able to get out because she never had a key for the deadlock.
Later, she claimed, she and her husband met with high-ranking police officials, but nothing was resolved.
"He's done a crime and he's never been locked up. If an ordinary man was married to me he would have been locked away," she claimed.
"It hurts me to do what I have to do, but I would be saving someone else's life. I have tried every avenue for the Royal Bahamas Police Force to assist me," she said.
The woman said she had withstood being slapped across the face and kicked in the stomach. One injury on her forehead needed 27 stitches, she claimed.
Last year she left her belongings and walked out of their home with nothing apart from her children.
"Maybe I thought this was a bad dream and I'd ask him to go to counselling to get help. I have tried every avenue to make my marriage work," she said.
"I have never done anything for him to have to hit me. I never did anything to even get him upset that he had to hit me. I am not going to make excuses for myself and say "Oh, I made him mad."
"I don't care what kind of bad day you had at work, it was never that bad that you had to come home and do these things to the person you said you love," she said.
