A U.S. Department of State press release from the office of spokesman Sean McCormack revealed that the Secretary will be in the capital on March 21 – 22.
“The Secretary will discuss U.S. engagement in the Caribbean and our desire to deepen cooperation with countries in the region to promote democracy, en-hance economic competitiveness, strengthen security and the rule of law, and improve disaster preparedness,” the release stated. “The Secretary will also meet with Bahamian Prime Minister Christie to discuss U.S.-Bahamian relations.”
Ms. Rice’s visit comes at a time when The Bahamas is embroiled in a “strained” relationship with the United States over the detention of two Cuban dentists and the alleged beating of a Miami reporter at the Carmichael Road Detention Centre.
Cuban-American groups in Miami targeted cruiseships bound for The Bahamas nearly two weeks ago, demanding fair treatment of all migrants in The Bahamas and the respect of human rights.
The detention of the two Cuban dentists has drawn local and international media attention.
Prime Minister Perry Christie and U.S. Ambas-sador John Rood have commented on the issue and so did Florida Governor Jeb Bush, during his visit with Prime Minister Christie in the capital on February 20.
Tourism Minister Obie Wilchcombe, in a recent interview, assured that all sides are working diligently to find a resolution and added that the matter was being handled with the greatest degree of diplomatic sensitivity.
In the country’s defence, he insisted that The Bahamas does not abuse people or keep any migrants beyond the period of time that is required.
Minister Wilchcombe pointed out that the country has a strong reputation in the world as one that celebrates humanity and has fought for the liberation of a people all over the world.
