In honour (sic) of his government’s fourth anniversary in office, Prime Minister Perry Christie is expected to give the nation a full report on his administration’s record during a one-night convention.
The convention is scheduled for Tuesday at the Wyndham Nassau Resort at 7pm.
Progressive Liberal Party Chairman Raynard Rigby told reporters during a press conference held at the party’s headquarters on Wednesday that the performance of the PLP government thus far has been exceptional.
“Come May 2, 2006 we will be able to say to the Bahamian people that we have been a working and well focused government. We are on track in delivering on our promises that we made during the last election,” Mr. Rigby said.
“Our record is in the public domain and on May 2 this party will be in a one night convention where our party leader will speak to the nation about the record of his government and will confirm that The Bahamas is better off under this PLP than ever before.”
Evaluating the PLP’s performance, Mr. Rigby said that if Bahamians judged the PLP on its record they would see that the work done by this government has been outstanding.
“I believe the performance has been magnificent,” Mr. Rigby said.
“If you look at the economy, we believe in the anchor developments that have been attracted to the Family Islands.
“We believe that in terms of the stability of our economy, in terms of the level of external reserves, the work which is being done with urban renewal, our housing initiatives, the aggressive immigration policy and crime fighting policy of the government, we believe that we have done a fantastic job over the past four years.”
According to Mr. Rigby, about 65 percent to 70 percent of promises in the PLP’s “Our Plan” campaign document has already been fulfilled.
“For those uninformed commentators who suggest that the PLP has done nothing since May 2, 2002 we say let them visit the people of Exuma, Eleuthera, Rum Cay, Mayaguana, Bimini, Acklins, Abaco and West End, Grand Bahama and ask the people living in those communities and islands whether their lives have been materially improved since May 2, 2002,” he said.
“The answer will be a resounding yes.”
The chairman claimed that through door-to-door canvassing the party has found that the Bahamian people are still very much connected to the leadership of the PLP.
“We have thus far noted that the Bahamian people have no affection for Hubert Ingraham and the FNM,” he said.
“Bahamians are no fools. The people want a stable party where there is no infighting and where there is respect for the role that young people can play in the building of the institutions of this country.
“They do not want a dictator or one who has no respect for their opinions. They know that they can find a safe place in the PLP and we continue to witness them flocking to us in droves.”
Other activities planned to celebrate the party’s fourth anniversary include a church service this Sunday at Calvary Deliverance Church at 11am, and a music fest on Arawak Cay on May 6.
