North Abaco’s Chief District Councillor, Stephen Pedican, said the bordello, which is on the edge of a national reserve and near the Treasure Cay Airport, houses a number of unlawful activities.
“This building is used as a strip club, night-club, and out in the back of the property they had a pen built and they were having cock fights,” said Mr Pedican. “Now the authorities went in and took down that pen where they were having the cock fights.”
Mr Pedican added that little is being done to close the illegal night-club but said the Ministry of Works in Abaco and the island’s local government will meet and discuss a plan of action.
“The only thing that is happening now is the Ministry of Works and local government are supposed to have a meeting,” Mr Pedican said. “The Works Ministry is now saying that the responsibility to take the building down is now in the hands of the local government.
“But it is [local government’s] understanding that it is not the case but we plan to meet and go through the Local Government Act to see their perspective,” he continued.
Mr Pedican further insisted that if the responsibility of tearing down the club falls on the shoulders of local government they will complete the job immediately.
“If that is the case it wouldn’t be a problem knocking it down,” he said. “We’ll just go ahead and give the orders to take it down.”
Meanwhile, he also revealed that the one-storey building has about four small rooms. One area is used as a bar and other areas are used for gambling while another two rooms are used as strip joints.
He said the club, which is frequented by illegal immigrants as well as Bahamians, opens only on weekends.
“This was a building that was built by a Haitian-Bahamian, who had status here in the country,” he explained. “But he still went ahead and built this building.
“[The activities] only happen on weekends because there is no electricity or running water,” he continued. “So they bring their generators down and power the place up.”
