No Charges Yet In Tourism Ministry Theft

The two women police were holding in connection with a major theft at the Ministry of Tourism have been released, but police expect that they will still bring charges in the matter, the Bahama Journal confirmed yesterday.

The Journal also confirmed that one of the women was an employee at the Ministry, but the other was not an employee.

However, the names of the women have not been released.

Chief Superintendent Marvin Dames said yesterday that an extensive investigation is ongoing and chose not to comment further.

Police are apparently investigating to determine who else may have been involved in stealing more than a quarter of a million dollars from the Ministry. The investigation has reportedly been ongoing since the beginning of the year.

The Journal reported on Wednesday that the money went missing from the Ministry’s accounts department and it is believed that the employees involved wrote more than 30 cheques and stole the money over an 18-month period.

Police would not say when they expect to take anyone to court in relation to the theft, but they indicated that they were pretty certain that they will be able to.
