Diana Bethel has an appointment with attorney Wayne Munroe in a bid to “get justice” following the killing of her 20-year-old son outside their home in Pinewood Gardens.
A family spokesman told The Tribune last night: “We all know Deron was shot dead. What police are now trying to decide is whether it was a wrongful killing. We still believe it was murder.
“We also believe that police are desperately trying to massage the truth and stalling for time.”
However, Mrs Bethel is determined to follow this through and take it to a civil court if she needs to.
Deron Bethel was sitting in his car when two plainclothes officers arrived on the scene to deal with a domestic dispute in a neighbouring house. A shot was fired through Deron’s car window, hitting him in the heart. He died on the spot.
A total of seven affidavits have now been forwarded to police by Pinewood witnesses who fear there will be a “fudging” or “cover-up” of the incident.
The family spokesman said: “I think the average black person feels that no-one cares. I feel that specifically in relation to this particular family.”
Meanwhile, Pinewood residents are now pushing for a proposed park in their community to be “The Deron ‘Sharky’ Bethel Park” after the dead man.
The park, due to be funded by Kerzner International, is set for completion this year.
A resident said: “We feel its right that Sharky should be remembered this way. His car came to rest at the site of the park on the night he died.”
