Tragedy Narrowly Averted

Police reports revealed that the accident occurred at about 2:45 p.m. when James Forbes, 37 was driving his white, 1995 Chevy Taxi van #62, east along East Sunrise Highway in the right lane with 10 American visitors as passengers, when an unidentified green car, also travelling east in the left lane, reportedly swerved sharply onto the right lane.

Attempting to avoid a collision, Mr. Forbes swerved sharply to his right, careening across the median and collided almost head on into a car, a white, 2003 Suzuki Liana, being driven by 36-year-old Gene Bethel.

Mr. Bethel received injuries to his face and knee for which he received treatment at the Rand Memorial Hospital and was discharged.

Police reports stated that only one of the 10 U.S. visitors sustained any injury; Lorraine Bernadi, 42, of Somaya Georgia, who suffered a slight cut on her nose.

Mr. Forbes and the other nine visitors all escaped unhurt.

In other news, a young man is expected to face criminal charges when he appears in a Freeport Magistrate’s court this morning.

Reports are that at about 9:45 a.m. an off duty officer was at home asleep in his bedroom, when he was awoken by the sounds of breaking glass.

As the officer rushed into the hallway, he encountered a young man who had just entered through an eastern bedroom window and spotted a second young man climbing through the same window, who retreated upon seeing the officer.

As the officer attempted to arrest the young man in the hallway, he resisted violently but was eventually subdued.

The police were alerted and both the officer and the suspect were taken to the Rand Memorial Hospital, where they were treated for injuries sustained during the scuffle.

Formal charges are expected to be filed against the 19-year-old resident of Beaconsfield Drive sometime this morning.
