A leading Nassau doctor who has accused prominent businessman William 'Billy' Saunders of threatening him with a gun during a confrontation last year says he will not drop the charge and is determined to see the case completed in court despite being frustrated by repeated adjournments.
Dr Judson Eneas told The Tribune yesterday that he is adamant about pursuing the case because of the racist nature of the alleged event and the adverse psychological effects it has had on himself and his wife.
He said police had initially asked him to accept an apology from Mr Saunders, who is his neighbour.
Dr Eneas said that since the alleged incident last October, he and his wife have felt insecure about their safety. He said he has even had to take his wife, Marcheta Eneas to consult a psychiatrist.
Mr Saunders was arraigned in court in November on the charge of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life. According to court dockets, Mr Saunders had in his possession a shotgun at the time of the alleged incident.
Dr Eneas explained that the first time he went before a court in connection with the incident was in February this year. Since then the case has been adjourned three times without progress.
Dr Eneas said he was forced to shut down his office on those occasions. He said that at yesterday's session he was informed there was an "irregularity in the technicality" of the charge and that this irregularity had to be sorted out. The case has now been adjourned to June 26, he said.
"I don't know why it took them seven months to figure out that there is an irregularity in the charge," Dr Eneas said.
He said he did not believe that prolonging the case was deliberate, but felt that with a show of public support the matter world move more expeditiously.
"I don't want to think that there is anything deliberate ᅠgoing on but I think that if they saw some public support that perhaps whatever is going on will cease. I think that the public needs to know that the case has been adjourned to June 26. 1 am not dropping the case and we could use some public support," Dr Eneas said.
He noted that he had had no interraction with Mr Saunders since the day of the alleged incident.
No one would want to deny Mr Eneas the justice he deserves, however, this case is being watched very carefully by Bahamas B2B, as it is a reverse mirror of an incident that occurred several years ago. ᅠWhen the allegedly corrupt Carl Bethel was Attorney General, the founder of the Bahamas B2B website was threatened and attacked by a black Bahamian wielding a razor sharp cutlass.
After physically assaulting the B2B founder, the racist negro told the white foreigner, that if "you open your mouth, I'll chop you up."
After two years of frivolous delays and mysterious adjournments, the case was heard in front of a decidedly partial and clearly biased magistrate. The charges against the racist negro were dropped. The magistrate, almost happily, admitted that the police had failed miserably in prosecuting the case. It was obvious that the prosecutorial incompetence was carefully planned.
If Mr. Saunders is successfully prosecuted in the Saunder/Eneas case, it will clearly point out the racism against whites that exists in The Bahamas. It will prove, "beyond a shadow of a doubt", that racism is alive and well in The Bahamas, and what is being said in international circles is true: "white foreigners can not get justice in The Bahamas".
