Bus Driver Charged In Girl’s Death

A New Providence bus driver was charged in a Magistrate’s court yesterday with manslaughter in connection with the death of a five-year-old girl, who was struck by his jitney on Carmichael Road in March.

Julian King, 37, a resident of Sea Breeze Estates, was charged with causing the death of Faith Mackey through negligent driving.

Magistrate Renee McKay informed the accused that through a voluntary bill of indictment, his case will be forwarded directly to the Supreme Court for trial.

Making greater use of voluntary bills of indictment is a part of the newly implemented swift justice programme that the Attorney Generalメs Office has activated in an effort to speed up the administration of justice.

It means that there will be no preliminary inquiry in the manslaughter case.

King, a former police officer, was not required to enter a plea. He was granted a $15,000 bail with two sureties. The case has been adjourned to August 2.

Police reports had indicated that Faith, a student of the Carmichael Primary School, was run over and killed by the jitney shortly after she and her mother had exited the bus. Her mother was also struck, according to reports.

Authorities had also confirmed that immediately following the incident Kingメs driverメs license was suspended.
