Director General Visits Baker’s Bay

Recently, Tourism Director General, Vernice Walkine lead a group of tourism officials to Abaco and visited Baker’s Bay. The group were given a tour of the proposed resort which has had worked stalled by the Save Guana Cay Reef Association (SGCRA).

The SGCRA has been battling the resort development largely on the grounds that its footprint would eventually not only be bad for the community and its way of life it would also be harmful to the environment.

Ms Walkine was accompanied by Tommy Thompson, Deputy Director General; Angela Cleare, Senior Director, Out Islands; Geneva Cooper, Senior Product Development; Jeritzan Outten, Director of Abaco Tourism Office and Bernadette Harding, Abaco Tourism Officer.

According to a press release Ms Walkine and her team were “given a guided tour of the Baker’s Bay property by Dr. Livingston Marshall, Senior VP, Environmental & Community Affairs for Baker’s Bay who explained details of the project”.

Dr. Livingston also explained the “economic impacts at the local and national levels” and the “overall environmental efforts of the project”.

The tourism team was transported to Guana Cay from Marsh Harbour on board the development’s luxurious “Discovery” yacht.

Once on the island they boarded a fleet of Land Rovers and golf carts that took them past the Baker’s Bay nursery, where thousands of native flowers and plants are being cultivated, to the main compound which comprises five plush wooden bungalows including a dining room adorned with Amos Ferguson paintings, a deluxe spa and opulent bed and bath facilities boasting all the latest electronic gadgets and amenities.
