Citing his untiring efforts to place environmental and sustainable tourism high on the agenda for our nation and the tourism industry, the Bahamas Hotel Association awarded Earlston McPhee, General Manager for the Ministry of Tourism's Sustainable Department, with its annual Sustainable Tourism Award.
At a ceremony which took place on Saturday during the Orange Hill Beach restoration project being conducted by the New Providence Community Centre Church and neighbouring corporate and residential partners, BHA Director Jeremy MacVean applauded Mr. McPhee. "Nothing better defines sustainability than example. Earlston is indeed a personification of sustainability. He has been both consistent and persistent in his desire to enlighten all of us, by example. The preservation and
enrichment of our environment, our culture, our heritage, these are all things which help make us special and unique and that which attracts visitors to our beautiful country. Earlston is one of those leading the charge for which we are all most appreciative" he added. Two years ago the Ministry
of Tourism appointed Mr. McPhee to the post of General Manager for the Sustainable Department. The post was created by the Ministry in recognition of the interdependence between our environment, culture and heritage and the long term sustainability of our nation's tourism industry.
Director General Vernice Walkine recalling Mr. McPhee's said that it was evident that his heart was in sustainable tourism, "a term which was then unfamiliar to most of us". She thanked him for educating "us over the years" and nurturing understanding and appreciation for our environment.
