Two Bahamian men are being held in a South Florida jail after more than $16.4 million worth of powdered cocaine was seized from their fishing vessel.
According to the Associated Press, the boat was travelling from The Bahamas to Florida.
Discovered on board the vessel was the captain, Tristan Michael Seymour, 22, of Freeport, Bahamas, and Quincy Nathaniel Garvey, 41. The US Coast Guard boarded the vessel for a routine inspection on Friday afternoon about 25 miles off the coast of Fort Pierce, according to the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office.
The vessel was towed to a Fort Pierce shipyard, where a dog with the sheriffs office K-9 unit alerted officers to the presence of drugs, in five suitcases on board.
The suitcases contained 361.5 pounds of cocaine,to authorities said.
Seymour and Garvey reportedly told investigators they were paid to bring the cocaine to Florida from Grand Bahama.
They were charged with trafficking in cocaine over 400 grams and expected to face additional federal charges, authorities stated.
