Four men were charged in a Magistrate’s Court yesterday in connection with a recent spate of break-ins at government buildings.
Sergio Williams, 28, of Palm Beach Street; Julian Evans, 34 of Garden Hills; Wayne Toussaint, 41, alias “Blood” of Marathon Road and Chadra Swan, 39, of Joans Heights were arraigned before Magistriate Jeanine Weech-Gomez in Court One, Bank Lane yesterday on shopbreaking and stealing charges.
Toussaint and a visibly bruised Evans, who sobbed in the prisoner’s dock, were allowed to sit during their arraignment.
It is alleged that Toussaint, Williams and Evans sometime between Wednesday July 7 and Thursday July 8, broke into the Passport Office at Thompson Boulevard. It is also alleged that the three men stole a safe containing $6,817 as well as a station wagon valued at $6,145 – the property of the Passport Office.
It is also alleged that the three men on Saturday, July 10, broke into and entered the Road Traffic Department building on West Bay Street. It is further alleged that the three men between Friday, July 30, and Tuesday, August 3, broke into the Immigration building on Hawkins Hill. There, it is alleged, they stole four Dell computers altogether valued at $6,100, and four bullet proof vests altogether valued at $14,000.
Toussaint and Swan have also been charged with breaking into the Nassau Street Court building between Friday, July 30, and Saturday, July 31. They are also charged with breaking into Court 9 at the Nassau Street Complex.
None of the men were charged with the break-in at the Supreme Court.
All of the men pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutors argued against releasing the men on bail, while attorneys for the men tried to convince the magistrate to release them on bail.
All of the men were denied bail and remanded to prison where they will be seen by doctors form Princess margaret Hospital.
The men return to Court 5 on August 26 for a status hearing.
