The$70 million relocation of shipping from downtown Nassau to Arawak Cay is officially underway as construction on the new roll-on, roll-off dock begins.
The Nassau GuardianBusiness section was given exclusive access to the site where 40 Bahamians are helping to create Nassau’s new port under the guidance of contractor American Bridge.
Already the cranes and bulldozers have moved in and the piles on which the new container port will be built are being driven.
After years of political manoeuvering the government and the 20 shipping firms earlier this year signed a partnership to create APD Limited, the joint public private venture which will see shipping move from Bay Street to Arawak Cay, freeing up Nassau’s waterfront for much needed development.
Now that the physical work has begun, the contractor is aiming to have the first 575-ft of dock space completed by the end of November.
