Illegal Dumper Will Go To Court

A man who was caught red-handed dumping garbage illegally in the Marshall Road area last week could appear in court as early as next week to answer to the charge.

Police from the East Street South Police Station are expected to slap him with a summons soon.

Minister of State for the Environment, Phenton Neymour was giving members of the media a tour of wetlands in the area when he spotted Omar Stubbs dumping garbage from a truck near one of the canals.

If Mr. Stubbs is found guilty of the offence he can be fined, face a term of imprisonment or both.

According to the Environmental Health Act 1987, the indiscriminate dumping of garbage and solid waste material carries a fine of up to $1,000, a prison term of nine months or both fine and imprisonment for a first time offender.

For a second conviction, a person can be fined $5,000, sentenced to one year in jail or given a fine and imprisonment.

According to Minister Neymour, who is also the Member of Parliament for the South Beach constituency, dumping has been a serious problem in the area.

“For many years in this constituency, we have had challenges with people [dumping] along the roadsides. Not only is it inappropriate, it is against the law.  The dump is available for individuals to dispose of their junk,” he said at the time.
