The new school year is fast approaching and many road users are on the roads making the necessary preparations for “back to school”.
The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOWT) is aware of the increased traffic congestion usually associated with back to school shopping and opening of school.
In order to improve traffic flow during the back to school rush the Ministry of Public Works through the New Providence Road Improvement Project (NPRIP), has partnered with the Police Traffic Division. For the first two weeks of school, starting August 30th, Traffic Police will provide assistance at 8 locations where construction is ongoing during morning and afternoon peak traffic hours.
These locations include: Robinson Road: A Water & Sewerage (WSC) 24-inch water main as well as
service laterals are being installed in an effort to improve water flow to consumers. The Ministry intends to provide a safe passage for pedestrians along the route, define bus stop locations, pedestrian crossings and signage.
East Street, between Robinson and Soldier Roads: the contractor is currently constructing 2 new lanes on the western side of the roadway while installing a new 12″ water main and WSC service laterals. Areas for safe pedestrian traffic and bus stops will be clearly marked.
Baillou Hill Road, between Robinson Road and Wulff Road: the contractor has suspended work, per a Court ordered injunction However, the site is currently being secured to ensure safe movement of pedestrians and motorists. Defined bus stop locations and pedestrian crossings will also be installed.
While using Baillou Hill Road, the MOWT urge Bus/Taxi operators to pull out of the through lane onto the western carriageway to off-load passengers near the sidewalk for safe passage.
East Street South at the junction of East Street and Bamboo Boulevard: the contractor has substantially completed the re-alignment of the junction which provides a direct crossing of the junction. You can experience the new sidewalks and traffic signal that will be installed to manage traffic flows. All are encouraged, especially pedestrians to use the sidewalks. We ask that you exercise caution when crossing this major junction and cross at the designated locations.
Corridor 5 an 4 (New Bethel Avenue Extension) Effective 31 August 2010, road users travelling in the north-south direction should experience, for the most part, free flow conditions while travelling from Carmichael Road to Milo Butler Highway onto the new re-aligned Bethel Avenue straight out to Saunders Beach/West Bay Street.
Robinson Road and East Street Motorists may have noticed changes along Robinson Road and East Street, which includes, concrete barriers for temporary traffic management and the closure of Roberta Drive. These measures are being closely monitored. The Ministry of Public Works & Transport will be implementing additional temporary measures on First and Second Streets in the near future.
The Ministry takes this opportunity to encourage all road users to plan and allow a little extra time for your journeys, exercise good judgement while driving, and consider using alternate transportation systems like public transport services and carpooling. We also ask that you drive safely and sensibly through the new road schemes and obey the temporary traffic management and signage in place especially in construction zones.
The Ministry also encourages all road users to take care when approaching school zones and pedestrian crossings.
MOWT commends all motorists, businesses and residents, especially those who are directly affected, that have cooperated with us during the construction phase of road works.
The Ministry is committed to completing the New Providence Road Improvement Project.
