The official voice of thousands of labourers in the country yesterday publicly threw its support behind the highly anticipated $2.6 billion Baha Mar project.
Officials of the National Congress of Trade Unions of the Bahamas (NCTUB) yesterday said they are satisfied the controversial project is in the best interest of the country.
Baha Mar is projected to generate almost $15 billion in GDP, with over 8,100 direct and indirect jobs, totaling in excess of $7 billion in wages over a 20 year period.
According to officials, during the construction phase, over 30 Bahamian contractors will be granted in excess of $200 million in the first 12 months of the project.
NCTUB President John Pinder said those impressive numbers are just a few of the reasons why his union endorses the development.
As for the controversial issue of thousands of Chinese workers entering the country to work on the world-class, multi-billion dollar resort, Mr. Pinder said the NCTUB now supports that move as well.
“We do not have the skill set to do this project on our own. We are pleased to note that it’s been reported to us during the first year, this project will have 95 per cent Bahamian workers and that the majority of Chinese workers are not expected to come in until the third stage,” he said.
