Repeat Offender Makes Joke of Bahamas Criminal Justice System

A week after appearing before a magistrate on murder charges, repeat offender Dudley Johnson was back in court on a second murder charge.

Johnson, who goes by the street name, “Fire”, was arraigned before Magistrate Ancella Evans Williams for the August 27 murder of Cleveland Weir on Fowler Street.

He was also charged with the armed robbery of Joshua Weir and Fritz Nelson on the same day.

Johnson did not have to enter pleas to the charges as he was already in custody on a murder charge.

Just last week, Johnson was arraigned for the July 19 murder of Brendamae Johnson, who died weeks after she was shot outside a home on Rupert Dean Lane.

Johnson is also accused of the attempted murder of Burton Sands and Latherio Albury on the same date.

He is also accused of having an illegal firearm to endanger the lives of Ingamae Johnson and Darell Sands.

Preliminary inquiries will be held in both cases to determine if there is enough evidence for Johnson to stand trial.

In October 2009, in a majority decision, a Supreme Court jury acquitted Johnson of the March. 17, 2007 murder of Antonio Sands, who was shot in the head while gambling outside a home on Miami Street.

Sand’s gambling partners identified Johnson as the man who robbed them before fatally shooting their friend. But Johnson, who took the witness stand, said that he was the victim of mistaken identity.

Only a few months after his acquittal, police arrested Johnson regarding an alleged robbery spree. Johnson was on bail for armed robbery when he allegedly committed the murders.
