Run For A Cause

The public can get some exercise and a support a cause as a couple of charity run/walks are coming up over the next two weekends.

The Roadmasters Charity Run is set for Saturday, September 18. Both the Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) and the Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF) have pledged relay teams for the Armed and Uniformed Officers Relay Challenge, a new addition to the club’s three-year-old running event. Prison, immigration and customs officers also expected to participate.

“It’s always a challenge and an opportunity to get into these rivalries with our fellow law enforcement agencies, and this year should be good,” said RBDF training and sports officer, Sr. Lt. Raymond King.

The Charity Run begins at 4:30am on Saturday, September 18 at Montagu Beach. The public is invited to sign up for the 20-mile and 10-mile run or the two-mile run for kids. Proceeds are in aid of the Pilot Club of Nassau’s ongoing community initiatives, which this year, include the construction of a pool for the physically disabled.

Last year approximately 100 runners turned out on race day. The group raised $8,000 for charity in 2009. For more information and for updates and additional information, the public can call 341-2084, 364-3282 or 393-0226, or visit the group’s website at www.bahamasroadmasters.com or on facebook at Bahamas Road Masters Brm.

Those who are just getting warmed up and want more can also participate in the Royal Bank of Canada’s first Fun Run/Walk in aid of its RBC/RBTT Children’s Cancer Fund, a regional initiative established in 2008.

The event will take place in The Bahamas and around the region under the theme “What A Difference A Day Makes.” In New Providence the event is set for Saturday, September 25.

“The goal is to collectively raise$25,000 by holding Fun Run/Walks in every country in the region where RBC has a presence,” said Nathaniel Beneby, vice president and country head of RBC Royal Bank of Canada in The Bahamas.

The six-mile course begins at the East Hill Street Royal Bank of Canada House location at 6:00am. Participants will make a loop that includes Bay Street, the two bridges and Shirley Street. Post run/walk activities will be held on the grounds.

Registration begins at the bank’s network of branches on September 16. The public is also invited to give donations.

“We want people to walk as long as they can walk or as short as they can walk, and for those who don’t want to walk, come out and just have fun with us after the event,” said Dr. Corinne Sinquee Brown, a pediatric oncologist at the Princess Margaret Hospital.
