Witnesses say police used excessive force and endangered the public in a reckless spray of bullets outside the bank building at the Montague foreshore.
Police were making a routine traffic stop near the Nassau Yacht Club, around 10:00am on Wednesday, when a dreadlocked man brandishing a 9mm handgun jumped out of an unlicensed gray Nissan automobile and made a dash.
Witnesses say at least three police officers opened fire on the man, firing over a dozen shots before bringing the man down.
The wounded man, who was shot several times but was still alive, was taken by ambulance to the hospital while his presumed accomplice, another man who was also in the Nissan, was arrested on the scene.
Police have refused to talk about the incident but witnesses wonder why the police did not shoot the man in the leg to stop him, rather than in the torso.
The incident has sparked outrage in the community over the excessive use of force by police.
Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact them at 502-9991 or to call Crime Stoppers anonymously on 328-TIPS (8477).
