Angelo Poitier, 24, accused of killing his ex-girlfriend claimed in court that he had signed a confession statement under duress, having been threatened by police officers.
On trial for the murder of his 19-year-old ex-girlfriend, Shanice Adderley, Poitier said, “I told them what they wanted to hear. It was not freely from my own will.”
Adderley was found in grave on Infant View Road and autopsy reports concluded that cause of death was blunt force trauma to the body.
Making an unsworn statement from the prisoner’s dock, Poitier was not subject to cross-examination by prosecutors.
Poitier said, “They [police] put handcuffs on me and told me that I was under arrest for the disappearance of Shanice Adderley. I told them I didn’t know where she was.”
Poitier claimed that while the officers were transporting him to the Nassau Street Police Station one of them jabbed him and that once at the station the officer made threats to him and pushed him down while he was still in handcuffs.
Poitier made further claims of threats, saying that when he was at the Central Detective Unit, officers told him he better tell them what they want to hear, so he signed a confession in fear that they would brutalise him if he didn’t.
