After six women were robbed at gunpoint in easttern New Providence during a three-week period, police admit that the armed robbery of females is one of the most serious of several crime trends emerging in the east.
Women traveling alone between the hours of 8:00pm and 1:00am are particularly at risk, police said.
“We are very concerned about this,” said Superintendent Ismella Davis, officer-in-charge of the Eastern Division. “These incidents occur when these females have either left work in the evening or left the food store and are returning home alone.”
Police are encouraging all women – particularly women living in eastern New Providence – to stop at a police station and ask an officer to follow them home in the evenings if they have concerns about their safety.
Women were also advised to inform relatives before leaving to go home.
Davis said two men driving a green Honda with an unknown license plate number are responsible for at least three of the robberies.
The men are described as having slim builds and dark complexions. Despite the frequency and severity of the crimes, police have failed to release a sketch of the suspects.
Police also revealed that there has been an increase in housebreakings in the division.
Officers said thieves are breaking into homes during the daytime after residents depart, apparently looking to steal laptops and jewelry.
Tthe theft of Bahamas Electricity Corporation (BEC) meter boxes is another emerging crime trend in the area. In recent weeks, police in the east have investigated four matters involving meter box theft.
