The Ministry of Education was given a donation of $10,000 in books by the United States Deputy Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Julissa Reynoso, and United States Ambassador to The Bahamas, Nicole A. Avant.
The books were donated to support the U.S. Embassy initiated “Read To Lead” programme, a nationwide reading and mentoring programme for students in grades 4-6. The donation from the United States Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) is part of the US government’s longstanding commitment to strengthen local communities and build new partnerships in The Bahamas.
The announcement was made during a press conference held at the British Colonial Hilton on Tuesday, October 5. During the press conference, DAS Reynoso also announced new funding of $1.6 million for The Bahamas to support the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative (CBSI).
The CBSI, a Caribbean-U.S. initiative, is an effort by Caribbean countries and the United Stated to better coordinate security measures and justice in matters with respect to the protection of citizens. On hand to receive the donation was Mrs. Elma Garraway, permanent secretary, Ministry of Education.
