A mother who allowed her boyfriend to beat her child to death was sentenced to 15 years in prison while her murderous boyfriend was sentenced to 25 years.
A jury found Makeisha Brown, 25, and Leroy Rolle, 20, were both equally responsible for the death of Brown’s son, Levano, who was only 19 months old.
Apparently, there was evidenc that Ms Brown actually hit the child.
Brown and Rolle lived together in a rented room on East Street South when the child died in March 2007 due to blunt force trauma to the head and abdomen and multiple injuries to his torso and limbs.
Rolle, who expressed no remorse, admitted to beating the child with a shoe and a belt. Ms Brown said she was aware of the abuse but did nothing and left the child in Rolle’s care.
Senior Justice Anita Allen said; “This was a horrific crime. Injuries were inflicted on a helpless child who was unable to protect himself, who was unable to complain about the abuse.”
She said little Levano was slaughtered in the presence of and with the acquiescence of his mother.
Inexplicably, possibly due to incompetent prosecution, Brown and Rolle were acquitted of the murder charge and found guilty instead of manslaughter.
Ms Brown had another baby in June. Rhat child will be cared for by the child’s father and maternal grand-mother while Brown serves her sentence.
