Thirty-one workers at the Bimini Bay Resort were laid off earlier this week as the company continued to struggle with low occupancy levels.
Labour Minister Dion Foulkes said his ministry was notified of the layoffs late last week.
The Nassau Guardian reports that Mr Foulkes said:
“They informed us the latter part of last week that they were going to lay off 31 persons on Monday past and that they were reducing their staff from 119 to 88, and that this was all due to low occupancy at the resort. They also said that they kept the employment level high for a very long period of time but due to the low occupancy they were forced to take this action.
“They also said if things improved they will give them first option for re-engagement.”
The layoffs came more than a month after 21 workers were terminated from the luxury resort. At that time low occupancy levels were also cited for the sackings.
Coincidence?
Monday’s layoffs took place at a time when the resort remained at an impasse with the Bahamas Hotel Catering and Allied Workers Union regarding a new industrial contract for line staff employees.
The union has hinted at industrial action if the situation is not resolved.
