Two shootings over the weekend have pushed the homicide count to an all time high of 88 for the second year in a row.
Last year’s record high murder count of 87 has already been exceeded with one month still remaining in this year – and December has historically been one of the deadliest months of the year.
Two men, both 22 years old, were shot and killed in separate incidents. One incident occurred in the Nassau Street and Dean’s Lane area and the other on Woodes Alley, off Market Street.
This is the third time in four years that the Bahamas has set a new murder record. Previous records were set in 2007 with 78 murders, and 2009 with 87 murders.
Unfortunately, it is expected that the homicide count for 2010 will increase within the last month of the year.
In a recent interview, Commissioner of Police Ellison Greenslade said that the continuous increase in violent crime is an indication of deeper societal problems, including the rising recidivism rate, proliferation of weapons and the judicial system.
