Police shot and killed Walden Mitchell, a former member of the Royal Bahamas Police Force, last night at First Street, Coconut Grove. Mitchell was wanted by police for attempting to kill a serving member of the police force.
Assistant Commissioner Hulan Hanna confirmed that Mitchell and another unidentified man were seen in the area around 9:00pm on a motorcycle. According to Hanna, when police approached Mitchell he pointed a firearm at the officers, who responded with their firearms, hitting Mitchell. He died at the scene. The second man was taken into police custody uninjured. Police said they recovered two firearms from the scene, a pistol grip shotgun and a handgun.
Police had released an all points bulletin for Mitchell, 38, of Roland Street yesterday.
He is wanted by the Central Detective Unit for the attempted murder of PC 3331 Johnson.
Teams of officers could be seen around the island looking for him early yesterday morning shortly after the shooting, which took place sometime after 6:00am.
Police said officers from the mobile division were on routine patrol on Palm Tree Avenue and 3rd Street Coconut Grove when they observed a male wanted by the Grove Police Station far questioning in connection to a firearms complaint.
“On approaching the suspect, the suspect fired gunshots at the officers which resulted in a police officer receiving gunshot imjuries to the jaw,” reported Sergeant Chrislyn Skippings, who is the police press officer.
“The officer was taken to hospital via police vehicle where he is detained in stable condition.”
Police believe that Mitchell may also be responsible for other crimes.
